Birth Chart
A map of the sky at the exact moment you were born, and the reason a horoscope written for your sun sign alone can only ever be a twelfth of the story.
What a birth chart is
A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a diagram of where every planet sat, from the perspective of your birthplace, at the exact minute you were born. It does not change. Everything else in astrology is read against it.
It needs three pieces of information, and all three matter: your birth date, your birth time, and your birth place.
Why birth time matters so much
Your rising sign, the sign that was on the eastern horizon at your birth, changes roughly every two hours. It determines which sign sits on each of your twelve houses, which changes the meaning of every planet in the chart.
Two people born the same day in the same city, six hours apart, share a sun sign and almost nothing else structurally. This is the single biggest reason generic horoscopes feel hit-or-miss.
The three that people know
| Placement | Describes | Requires |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Core identity, ego, direction | Date |
| Moon | Emotional life, instincts, needs | Date and time |
| Rising / Ascendant | Outward manner, chart structure | Date, time and place |
The twelve houses
Houses are areas of life. A planet's meaning is coloured by which house it falls in, Venus in the second house behaves very differently from Venus in the eighth.
| House | Area of life |
|---|---|
| 1st | Self, appearance, approach |
| 2nd | Money, values, possessions |
| 3rd | Communication, siblings, local travel |
| 4th | Home, family, roots |
| 5th | Creativity, romance, children |
| 6th | Work, routine, health |
| 7th | Partnership, marriage, open enemies |
| 8th | Shared resources, transformation, intimacy |
| 9th | Belief, higher study, long journeys |
| 10th | Career, reputation, public role |
| 11th | Friends, groups, hopes |
| 12th | Solitude, the unconscious, what is hidden |
Aspects
Aspects are the angles between planets, and they describe how those parts of you interact. A conjunction fuses two planets. A trine lets them cooperate easily. A square creates friction that generates growth. An opposition pulls in two directions at once.
Easy aspects are not automatically good. A chart full of trines can lack the tension that produces effort; squares are where most people's actual development happens.

Common questions
What if I don't know my birth time?
You still get accurate sun and moon readings, plus tarot and numerology. Without a time, the rising sign and house placements cannot be calculated reliably. Many people can find their birth time on a birth certificate or hospital record.
Is a birth chart the same as a horoscope?
No. The birth chart is fixed, it is the sky at your birth. A horoscope reads current planetary movements against that fixed chart.
Does my chart change over time?
The natal chart never changes. What changes is the transits, where the planets are now relative to your chart.
