A horoscope is a reading built from the positions of the planets at a particular moment, interpreted against a zodiac sign. A daily horoscope describes how today's planetary movements, called transits, interact with the placements you were born with.
That last part is where most horoscopes fall short. A reading written for "Leo" is written for roughly one twelfth of the planet. A reading calculated from your full birth chart knows your moon sign, your rising sign, and which house a transit is actually moving through for you.

Sun, moon and rising: the three signs that matter
Most people know only their sun sign. It is the least specific of the three.

Your rising sign, also called the ascendant, changes roughly every two hours. This is why birth time matters: two people born on the same day in the same city, four hours apart, have meaningfully different charts.
Daily, weekly or monthly?
They answer different questions, and reading all three at once tends to produce noise rather than insight.
- Daily: fast-moving transits, mostly the Moon. Useful for mood, timing and small decisions.
- Weekly: the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars. Useful for planning a week of work and relationships.
- Monthly: slower transits and the lunar cycle. Useful for themes rather than events.
How to read a horoscope usefully
Treat a horoscope as a prompt for reflection rather than a forecast of events. The useful question is not "will this happen to me?" but "where in my life is this already true?" A reading that describes tension around communication is more valuable as a reason to reread an email than as a prediction that an argument is coming.

What is a horoscope, exactly?
A reading based on where the planets sit relative to a zodiac sign at a given time. A daily horoscope interprets today's planetary movements against the placements in your chart.
Why do horoscopes differ between apps and newspapers?
Astrologers use different house systems and, in some traditions, a different zodiac entirely. Most published horoscopes are also written for a sun sign alone, which leaves out the majority of your chart.
Can I get a horoscope without my birth time?
Yes. Sun-based daily readings, tarot and numerology all work without it. You will not get an accurate rising sign or house placements until you add a birth time.
Is a horoscope a prediction?
