How the Chinese zodiac works
Unlike Western astrology's twelve signs tied to a birth month, the Chinese zodiac assigns one of twelve animals to an entire birth year, cycling Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, then repeating. The Chinese New Year, not January 1st, marks the boundary between years, so a birth date in January or February can fall under the previous year's animal.

The five elements
Each animal is also paired with one of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) on a ten-year rotation, so the full cycle before a combination repeats is sixty years, not twelve. A Wood Dragon and a Fire Dragon share the animal's core traits but express them differently.
