Chart Ruler
The planet that rules your rising sign, often called the key to the whole chart: its sign and house show where your life energy flows.
Definition
Each sign has a traditional ruling planet. The chart ruler is the ruler of the sign on your Ascendant. With Aries rising, Mars rules the chart; with Libra rising, Venus.
| Rising sign | Chart ruler |
|---|---|
| Aries, Scorpio | Mars (Pluto also used for Scorpio) |
| Taurus, Libra | Venus |
| Gemini, Virgo | Mercury |
| Cancer | Moon |
| Leo | Sun |
| Sagittarius, Pisces | Jupiter (Neptune also used for Pisces) |
| Capricorn, Aquarius | Saturn (Uranus also used for Aquarius) |
How to read it
Look at the chart ruler's sign, house and aspects. A Leo rising whose Sun sits in the 10th house pours energy into career and visibility; a Cancer rising with the Moon in the 4th is oriented toward home and family. Astrool shows your chart ruler when your birth time is known.

Astrool calculates your full birth chart, not just your sun sign, and writes your daily, weekly and monthly readings against it.
Common questions
Do I need my birth time to know my chart ruler?
Yes, because it depends on the rising sign, which changes every two hours or so.
Should I use modern or traditional rulers?
Both are used. Traditional rulers are standard for the chart ruler; modern co-rulers add nuance for Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces.
