Astrool Modalities (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable)
Cardinal, fixed and mutable: how a sign acts, whether it starts things, sustains them or adapts them.
The three modalities
| Modality | Signs | Style |
|---|---|---|
| Cardinal | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | Initiating, setting direction, starting |
| Fixed | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | Sustaining, loyal, seeing things through |
| Mutable | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | Adapting, learning, changing with the situation |
Cardinal signs begin each season, fixed signs hold its middle and mutable signs bridge into the next. Each element has one sign of each modality.
Reading the balance
Many cardinal planets: you start much and may finish less. Many fixed planets: great endurance, with stubbornness growing alongside it. Many mutable planets: flexible and curious, with commitment to one path harder. Signs of the same modality form squares and oppositions, which is why they can clash despite sharing a style.

Common questions
What is a modality in astrology?
One of three qualities, cardinal, fixed or mutable, describing how a sign acts.
Is modality the same as element?
No. Element describes temperament (fire, earth, air, water); modality describes mode of action.
