Houses in Astrology
The chart is divided into twelve houses, each an area of life. Planets show what, signs show how, houses show where.
What houses are
While the zodiac divides the sky by the Sun's yearly path, houses divide it by the daily rotation of the Earth, starting from the Ascendant. Because they depend on time and place, houses need an exact birth time.
The twelve houses
| House | Area of life |
|---|---|
| 1st | Self, body, appearance, approach |
| 2nd | Money, possessions, values |
| 3rd | Communication, siblings, short trips |
| 4th | Home, family, roots |
| 5th | Romance, creativity, children, play |
| 6th | Work, routine, health, service |
| 7th | Partnership, marriage, open rivals |
| 8th | Shared resources, intimacy, transformation |
| 9th | Travel, belief, higher learning |
| 10th | Career, reputation, public life |
| 11th | Friends, groups, hopes |
| 12th | The hidden, solitude, endings |
Angular, succedent, cadent
Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 are angular (strongest, most visible); 2, 5, 8, 11 succedent (resources and stability); 3, 6, 9, 12 cadent (learning and adapting). How cusps are drawn depends on the house system.

Common questions
What if a house is empty?
Every chart has empty houses. The house is then read through its sign and the planet ruling that sign.
Do houses work without a birth time?
Not reliably. They depend on the Ascendant, which changes every two hours.
