Tasseography
Reading the shapes left by coffee grounds or tea leaves in a cup, a tradition from Turkey to Iran and the Balkans.
How a coffee cup is read
- Drink the Turkish coffee, leaving the thick grounds at the bottom.
- Make a wish, cover the cup with the saucer and turn it over towards you.
- Wait for it to cool, then lift the cup and read the shapes.
Zones of the cup
Near the rim is the near future, the bottom the distant one; the handle side is the self and home, the far side others and the outside world. The saucer is read for the wish. Birds often mean news, roads a journey, fish luck and a ring an engagement.

Common questions
Can tea leaves be read the same way?
Yes, with loose tea; the zones and symbols are similar.
Why turn the cup towards yourself?
Tradition says it draws the grounds toward the drinker's own story.
