Vimshottari Dasha
A 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods. Which one you are in sets the main themes of those years.
Definition
The Vimshottari dasha system assigns each stretch of life to a planet. The first period belongs to the lord of your birth nakshatra, and its remaining length depends on how far through that nakshatra the Moon had travelled. The sequence then continues in fixed order.
Periods and lengths
| Mahadasha | Years |
|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 |
| Venus | 20 |
| Sun | 6 |
| Moon | 10 |
| Mars | 7 |
| Rahu | 18 |
| Jupiter | 16 |
| Saturn | 19 |
| Mercury | 17 |
| Total | 120 |
Each mahadasha divides into nine antardashas. The running planet colours the period according to its strength and the houses it rules in your chart. Astrool's Vedic Birth Chart highlights the current dasha and its end date.

Common questions
Which dasha am I in?
It depends on your Moon's exact degree at birth. The Vedic Birth Chart report shows it.
Is a Saturn or Rahu dasha bad?
Not by itself. A well-placed Saturn dasha can be the most productive period of life.
