Nitya Yoga

One of the five limbs of the Panchang: the sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes, divided into 27 yogas.

Nitya Yoga

Definition

Add the sidereal longitudes of the Sun and Moon; each 13°20' of the total is one yoga. There are 27, from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti, and each shows the overall background of luck for the day. These are different from the birth-chart yogas.

The 27 yogas

Vishkambha, Priti, Ayushman, Saubhagya, Shobhana, Atiganda, Sukarma, Dhriti, Shula, Ganda, Vriddhi, Dhruva, Vyaghata, Harshana, Vajra, Siddhi, Vyatipata, Variyana, Parigha, Shiva, Siddha, Sadhya, Shubha, Shukla, Brahma, Indra, Vaidhriti.

Atiganda, Shula, Ganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Vyatipata, Parigha and Vaidhriti are traditionally treated as unfavourable for important beginnings. The Panchang marks today's yoga as favourable or not.

Common questions

Is the Panchang yoga the same as yoga exercise?

No. The word means "union"; here it is the union of Sun and Moon longitudes.

How long does a yoga last?

About a day, varying with the Moon's speed.
