Sun Sign
The sign the Sun occupied on your birthday: your core identity and will, and the sign most people mean when they say "I am a Leo".
Definition
The Sun moves through all twelve signs of the tropical zodiac in a year, spending about a month in each. Your sun sign is the one it was passing through when you were born. Because the dates follow the seasons, the sun sign can be known from the birthday alone, which is why newspaper horoscopes use it.
What it describes
In a chart the Sun stands for identity, vitality, purpose and the conscious self you are growing into. It is the "I" of the chart. Its house shows where you most want to shine and be recognised.
Sun, Moon and rising
| Placement | Describes |
|---|---|
| Sun sign | Who you are becoming; your will and purpose |
| Moon sign | What you need to feel safe; your emotional nature |
| Rising sign | How you meet the world; first impressions |
Two people with the same sun sign can feel very different because these other placements differ. That is why Astrool horoscopes are written against the whole chart.
Born on a cusp?
Sign change dates shift by a day between years. If you were born near one, the exact time and place decide your sign. See cusp.
See it in your own chart
Astrool calculates your full birth chart, not just your sun sign, and writes your daily, weekly and monthly readings against it.
Common questions
Why is my sun sign different in Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24 degrees behind the tropical one, so the Sun often falls one sign earlier.
Is my sun sign the most important part of my chart?
It is one of the three most important, alongside the Moon and Ascendant. No single placement describes a whole person.
