Natal Chart
A map of the sky for the exact minute and place you were born, and the foundation every personal reading is built on.
Definition
A natal chart (birth chart, nativity, horoscope in the original sense) is a circular diagram showing where the Sun, Moon and planets stood in the zodiac at the moment of your birth, as seen from your birthplace. It is calculated from three inputs: date, time and place.
The four layers
| Layer | Answers |
|---|---|
| Planets | What: the drives and functions (love, will, thought) |
| Signs | How: the style each planet expresses itself in |
| Houses | Where: the area of life it plays out in |
| Aspects | With what: how the planets talk to each other |
On top of these sit the four angles, the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven and IC, which depend on the birth time and anchor the houses.
Why the birth time matters
The planets move slowly enough that the date fixes their signs. The sky, however, turns a full circle every day, so the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours and the house cusps move a degree every four minutes. Without a time, a chart is still useful, but houses and angles are unreliable. Birth time rectification can estimate a missing time.

Astrool calculates your full birth chart, not just your sun sign, and writes your daily, weekly and monthly readings against it.
Common questions
Is a natal chart the same as a birth chart?
Yes. Natal chart, birth chart and nativity all mean the same thing.
Can I read my chart without a birth time?
Partly. Planet signs and most aspects are reliable; the Ascendant, houses and Moon degree may not be.
