Solar Arc Directions

A forecasting method that moves every point of the birth chart forward by the same arc the progressed Sun has travelled, roughly one degree per year of life.

Solar Arc Directions

Definition

In solar arc directions, you take the distance the Sun has moved in the secondary progressed chart and add that same arc to every planet and angle. At age 30, everything has moved about 30°. When a directed point reaches an exact aspect to a natal point, the period is considered significant.

Use in rectification

Because the angles move with the arc, solar arcs are sensitive to birth time: four minutes of error shifts the Midheaven by about a degree, which moves the timing of directed events by about a year. Rectification tests candidate times by checking which one makes solar arcs to the angles coincide with your life events.

Common questions

How are solar arcs different from transits?

Transits use the real sky today; solar arcs are symbolic, moving the whole chart forward together.

How accurate are solar arcs?

They are a symbolic timing tool. Astrologers use them alongside transits and progressions.
